How to Care About Lightweight Countertop

Lightweight countertop is a sturdy, interesting addition to a kitchen. An advantage of a solid wood countertop, in contrast to a laminated countertop, is that you do not have to worry about the top layer (its tabs) lifting because of moisture build up between laminates / veneers and solid wood. This is not to say that you can have a massive oak disk installed and forget it. In order to keep your oak countertop looking good, you need to follow some basic rules for cleaning and care.

I clean the lightweight countertop regularly to avoid food stains. You can clean wood worktops with soap (detergent works well), water and a cloth or sponge. Dip the cloth or sponge into a soapy water sink, or simply soak the sponge and add a little detergent directly to the counter. Scrub the grime away. Rinse countertops with clean water (moisten a cloth or towel) and then wipe with a towel. Avoid placing hot items directly on oak countertops. Place hot pans on the stand.

Protect your lightweight countertop from skirts with cutting boards, rather than cutting food directly onto the counter. Oil your worktops, if recommended and necessary, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some-but not all-can be treated with mineral oil once a month. To oil countertops, place a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and rub it into the counter. Please note that the manufacturer may recommend another type of oil, or none at all – always check first.

Tips and warnings

If the food is stuck on the bench, use a spatula or other tools to scrape it. If it does not dissolve easily, add detergent directly to food and scrub with a warm wet sponge or cloth until it loosens.
